Passage

“It is the scent of orange-trees that draws the cuckoo to the village of falling flowers.”

A poem sent from Genji to Lady Reikeiden.

An orange tree grew in Reikeiden's garden. Genji compared himself to a bird visiting flowers.

Summary

Genji visits Lady Reikeiden. Her younger sister is Genji's mistress (Village of Falling Flowers). Orange blossoms were blooming in their mansion.

Comment

Season of the bright orange blossom. Genji and women talk about old memories. But their future is bleak. Emperor as their protector has died. Genji is also about to be expelled from the court due to Kokiden's pressure. Memories shine even more because unhappy now.
