30. Blue Trousers / Purple Trousers(藤袴)
Passage
How she longed at this time for some female confidant, mother or sister, with whom she could discuss even some small part of the difficulties which now beset her! Unfortunately, her most frequent visitors during all these months were Genji and Tō no Chūjō, precisely the two persons in whom it was least possible that she should confide.
Summary
The emperor appoints Tamakazura as Naishi (Chief Secretary). This means she will enter the inner palace. The men cannot give her up and send her love letters. Yūgiri, the son of Genji, also confesses to her, but she declines.
Comment
Yugiri, Genji, and many Suitors … men appear to be the protagonists of this chapter.
Yet they are not.
The more the men's activities are depicted, the deeper the women's suffering becomes—such is the structure.
This is particularly evident in the story of Tamakazura.
