39. Yugiri / Evening Mist(夕霧)
Passage
Ochiba did something which she knew would be thought childish and undignified. Picking up a mattress, she rushed into the store-room and locked the door from within. How long would she have to stay here? There was no knowing. All her people seemed now to be on Yūgiri’s side; and in utter wretchedness she settled down there for the night.
Ochiba tries a final stand. There are no allies. It's a lonely resistance.
Summary
Kashiwagi's widow, Ochiba, visited the mountain villa with her mother. There, Yugiri appeared and made advances toward the widow. However, Ochiba rejected him. Ochiba's mother, misunderstanding the relationship between Yūgiri and Ochiba, agonizes over it until she died.
Ochiba locks the door and resists Yūgiri. But Yūgiri forcefully marries Ochiba.
Yugiri's wife, Kumoi, disappointed in her husband, took their child and returned to her parents' home.
Comment
Many unfortunate women appear in The Tale of Genji,I think Ochiba is the most miserable.
Kashiwagi and Yugiri, the next generation of Genji, are getting women by fairly forceful methods.
