47. Agemaki / Trefoil Knots(総角)
Passage
For a moment Kaoru, who had been warned by Ben that Agemaki would not be alone, finding only one figure on the bed, imagined that Agemaki had sent her sister away; but his excitement and delight were soon rudely dispelled by the discovery that the girl asleep on the bed was not Agemaki at all.
What Kaoru found was not Agemaki, but her younger sister (Kozeri). Agemaki feels guilty for refusing Kaoru and offering Kozeri instead.
Summary
The first anniversary of Hachinomiya’s death. Kaoru confesses his feelings to his older sister, Agemaki , but she rejects him.
He also tries to arrange for his younger sister, Kozeri, to marry Niou. Niou visits Kozeri, but his mother forbids him from going to Uji.Niou's father, the emperor, arranges the marriage between his son and Yukiri's daughter.
The Uji sisters despair when Niou's visits stop and they hear rumors of his marriage.Due to mental strain, Agemaki fell ill and eventually passed away. Kaoru mourned and went into mourning.
Niou's mother, having heard rumors about Kaoru, allows Niou to marry Kozeri. Niou plans to move Kozeri from Uji to Nijō-in (Kyoto).
Comment
Kaoru wants the Agemaki to accept his feelings. So he struggles on behalf of his sisters while traveling back and forth between Kyoto and Uji.
However, his efforts backfired, and he lost his beloved Agemaki.
